As the horse becomes more workable, they are able to trot in hand and then work on moving the croup to the outside with the inside hind leg crossing over the outside hind leg. Colonel Carde gives an excellent demonstration of how patience is needed with a nervous horse. They work the walk, trot, and stretching the neck.
