The riders continue around the exercise. Buck explains how even a momentary loss of focus, which happens when one rider gets in another's way, can majorly interrupt the rhythm, and change the whole line. As the horses gain confidence, Buck switches the focus on adding and taking out strides between fences, challenging the riders to adjust the canter without losing the rhythm. He works with a rider who tends to hold onto her forward mare, and explains she needs to relax and let her go so she stops adding strides. All the riders practice using less rein and allowing the horse to lengthen the stride, while trying to maintain the line. Many riders have issues because they are using too much rein, Buck guides them to be confident and relax the hand so the horse can lengthen.
