Colonel Carde works in hand with this distracted gelding, and begins with creating a peaceful, confident, calm place. He takes contact with both reins, being persistent with asking for calm obedience and giving when he gives. He demonstrates asking for a stretching of the neck.

The rider now works more lateral movement on the circle and the Colonel reminds them to control the poll. They also are successful in asking him to stretch. Colonel Carde points out that the most common problem with working in hand is to overwork the inside rein and forget the outside rein.
